Ipswich Civic Hall Festival of Theatre BackgroundWhen Ipswich Civic Hall was officially opened by Gough Whitlam in 1975, it was largely seen as a community centre that provided a much-needed venue for local performances, business functions and community events. These days, the facility is so much more. Through the vibrant, evolving Festival of Theatre initiative, Ipswich Civic Hall has reinvented itself as a stunning combination of premier entertainment venue and community-focused function centre. Not only does it offer an extensive year-round program of local, national and international theatre events, it also continues to provide a range of services and facilities to a wide cross-section of the local community. In doing so, it has re-positioned itself as a multi-faceted centre which caters for its community and provides a drawcard for tourists and visitors. The Festival of Theatre program has positioned Ipswich Civic Hall as a top class entertainment centre for the region but one which has not lost its connection with the local community.
